Manual therapy
'With the right indication, significant pain reduction is achieved within one treatment session'
What is manual therapy
A manual therapist is a physical therapy specialist. He specializes in the more complex complaints and complaints that have a relation with the spine. A manual therapist has had extra training and education in origins and prognosis of complaints, but also about more specific and evidence based physical examination and treatment. Within the treatment a manual therapist makes use of specific mobilizations and manipulations (also known as adjustments) when necessary.
What is a manipulation
A manipulation is a very small and fast movement directed to a specific joint. That joint can be the ankle joint or the hip joint, but more often it is one or more joints in the spine. If a manual therapist manipulates you often hear a “popping” sound.
Manual therapy is combined with specific exercise therapy for the best results.
Reasons why manual therapy could be something for you
Manual therapy has shown to be effective in various complaints. You can visit a manual therapist with:
Headaches;
Neck pain, also if the pain is sometimes accompanied with dizziness
Neck/shoulder pain;
Upper back pain;
Lower back pain;
Arthrosis of the hip joint.
It is also good to know that sometimes pain is not the main complaint. Regularly athletes feel that their movement is not optimal. If, for example, a long distance runner has a restricted movement in his ankle, on the long term overuse injuries can occur because optimal mobility is needed.
Side effects
Manual therapy can have side effects, just like most healthcare interventions like medication for example. If you want to know more about side effects from manual therapy, this information will be provided. If manipulation of the upper neck is considered this information will be actively given. This is because there is evidence about possible side effects when manipulating the upper neck.
Are you afraid to be manipulated or manipulations are contraindicated? Therapy with a manual therapist can still be recommended for faster results. A manipulation is not the only trick a manual therapist has.
